Course Aim

Introduce IT infrastructure concepts in order to enable students to understand computer systems

architecture for effective configuration and use. Concepts of single user, multiuser, and centralised

operating systems are covered, along with applications and end-user computing.

Purpose

Apply the fundamentals of IT technical support concepts and practice to manage hardware and

software resources to meet organisational requirements. Demonstrate skills in hardware and

software diagnostic testing, maintenance, technical and customer support across a range of devices

Assessment Information

1. This is an open book practical assessment worth 60% of your total assessment marks.

2. The assessment due date is set by the tutor, submitting the assessment after the due date

occurs a 5% penalty per day

3. Assessments will not be accepted 7 days after the due date unless with an approved

extension

4. There are no resits for this assessment, your grade is final.

Assessment Scenario

As a new intern, working for the IT department of Hogwarts. You are to apply your knowledge and

skills to set up and configure 2 computing system for the IT department. You are required to install

common software and create users and apply security to the system, you will also have to show that

it can connect to the peer to peer network and the internet, on both systems.

One computer will have Microsoft Windows 10 installed and the other will have Ubuntu Linux installed

on it. You will also be required to install application software on both computers, create users and

perform some disc management tasks.

Task A

LO1 Install and configure common systems and application software – 30 marks.

You will need to install the following common operating systems and application software. For each

step of the process you will need to take screenshots to document your completion of the tasks.

Using appropriate tools and techniques you will need to secure both Operating Systems with user

Task C

LO2 Demonstrate knowledge of networking concepts including the Internet –20 Marks

Now you need to connect the computer to the Peer to Peer network and the router so that you can

browse the internet. Configure the network settings as follows and then browse to the following

websites and take a screenshot to show that the internet functions correctly

1: Set the workgroup name to Hogwarts in the Windows 10 computer.

2: Set the IP address on both systems to have a 192.168.1.x (where ‘x’ is a number between 10 and

20) and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

Task D

LO3 Demonstrate skills in hardware and software diagnostic testing, maintenance and technical and customer support

across a range of devices – 30 Marks

Now that you have installed and configured the computers you have been assigned the task of fixing

a couple of the broken computers.

Question 1:

What is the 6-step process to troubleshoot a common computer problem, describing each step.

Question 2:

Describe the problem, in your own words, and the steps to provide a solution to resolve the

following issues

? Computer doesn’t turn on and has a series of 3 long beeps, a pause the repeats. The

computer has an Award BIOS

? Computer cannot connect to the internet

? Computer turns on and when windows loads the screen is stuck in a resolution of 1024 x

768

Question 3:

To ensure the computer is looked after and maintained set the antivirus to automatically scan the

system daily at 11pm and set the disk clean up to occur on a daily basis at 10pm.
