CIV6115 Coursework 2022-23
Figure 1 shows a structural system ABCD.
This comprises a reinforced concrete beam ABC and a steel beam CD.
The beams are supported on pin supports at foundations at A, B and D and are connected at C by a
connection which can transfer shear forces but no moment.
The spans are:
AB - L1 metres
BC – L2 metres
CD – L3 metres
The reinforced concrete beam has a rectangular cross-section, h mm overall depth and b mm overall
width.
The entire structure is subjected to a uniformly distributed characteristic permanent line load g
kN/m, and a uniformly distributed characteristic imposed line load, q kN/m. There is also a
characteristic imposed point load Q kN at midspan on beam CD
Figure 1 – Structural System
Part 2 – Structural Design (70% of the overall module marks)
a) Using EC2 and EC3 you are to present calculations to determine the following (comprising 60% of
the final marks)
1) The longitudinal steel reinforcement required to provide sufficient flexural strength in the
reinforced concrete beam at support B
2) The diameter and spacing of shear links required to provide sufficient shear resistance in the
reinforced concrete beam at support B
3) The lowest mass of standard UK Universal Beam (UB) which has sufficient cross-sectional
moment resistance to resist the design bending at the centre of span CD and the design
shear force at C
4) An assessment of whether the steel beam chosen in task 3 above can resist the design
moment when lateral-torsional buckling effects are taken into account. You should assume
that the beam is restrained laterally and torsionally at supports C and D and also at midpoint
of span CD. Note that if you decide that the beam fails this check, you do NOT have to repeat
the calculations with a stronger beam section.
b) You should present with your calculations a sketch showing the cross-section of the concrete
beam at B, with the longitudinal and shear reinforcement indicated. (10% of the final marks.)
Material data
Concrete is strength class C35/40
Cover is 30mm
Characteristic strength of reinforcing bars is 500MPa
Steel beam grade is S355
Elastic Modulus of structural steel is 210GPa.
Shear Modulus of structural steel is 81GPa.
The correct figures for the maximum design values of the bending moments and shear forces at B
and in span CD are given for each student in the table at the end of this document. Please use these
values in this coursework.

Ps:
1) I have given each of you the correct design values of the Ultimate Limit State (ULS) bending
moments and shear forces that you should use in the design of the concrete and steel beams. Those
moments and shear forces are calculated from the individual values for the dimensions and
characteristic loads given to each of you for Part 1 of the coursework, with suitable partial safety
factors. Therefore, if you decide that you need to use the loading for any calculations in your Part 2
submission, you should use the loading that was allocated to you in part 1.
Part 1 figure:
2) Item 3 on PArt 2 of the Coursework requires you to select a steel beam which has sufficient
STRENGTH of cross-section to resist the ULS bending moment and shear strength. In a real design,
you would also need to perform a number of serviceability limit state (SLS) checks, such as deflection
or vibration. For the purpose of this coursework, you do not need to submit any SLS calculations.
3) Here is a copy of the Tata Steel sections booklet which you will find useful for the coursework.

This file is a very useful guidance document from the Steel Construction Institute, givening guidance
on a useful method for calculating the C1 parameter.
