Objective
The goal of this HW, is to find the water surface level at different locations of a
gradually varied water surface profile. Analysis will be perfoemed to demonstrate the
effect of different parameters of the results.
1st part: (please work together on this section, you can give a jointly written
document on this part, group of 2 or 3)
Q=80m3
/s;
S0=0.0002;
Manning’s coefficient n, n1=n2=n3=0.035;
Depth of the channel at the crossing, y=8m;
The height of the channel is 12m;
The shape of the channel, it shows at the figure1 below:
Figure1
Methods
Use the Newton-Raphson, method to compute y for known x
Start from the control section which is the depth of the water at the crossing,
y=8m,
For the Newton Raphson method follow the algorithm by using the formula
defined in the notes for F(y), F’(y), A, T, P, R, Sf,
You may pick an absolute error value of 0.0001 for the algorithm
Assume that the free board at each location is the difference between the water
level at the crossing ( 8m) and water surface level at the current location.
The second part should be individual work
