Essay Information:
This assessment is an essay and students are required to formulate their own topic.
Over the course of the semester, students will discover that the modern music industry consists of many eco-systems that contribute to the recording, marketing, distribution, consumption, exploitation and presentation of both recorded and live music. Some of the participants in these ecosystems include artists, producers, record companies, music publishers, streaming platforms, managers, booking agents, publicity and marketing services, promotors, music venues, traditional media and social media, along with businesses in associated industries such as film, television, games and advertising. More recently these music ecosystems have been greatly impacted by digital technology and the evolution of areas such as AI, Web 3 and other technologies. And don't forget that audiences and recorded music consumers are important participants in these ecosystems.
Students should formulate a topic that examines the relationships between some (but, obviously, not all) of these music industry participants and forces - focusing on business-related areas such as economics, legal considerations and impacts, financial aspects and the evolution of industry structures.
Try to avoid a general, overly broad, descriptive topic - instead, find an area of interest and consider how that area of the business of music has evolved and how that evolution has impacted the various participants in that area of the business.
The written assignment should reference key terms and concepts presented throughout the semester and will be assessed on -
Identification, explanation, analysis, demonstration and discussion of how:
Selected industry participants relate and work together in the music industry
Historical and contemporary shifts and issues impact potential developments in music businesses
Economic or business concepts apply to the chosen segments of the music industry
Students will also be assessed on:
A clear title outlining the purpose and topic of the paper
Clarity of argument and validation of opinions offered
Organisation of the paper and structural clarity
Whether the paper has been revised for grammar, adhered to the word count and formatted according to the guidelines.
Effective academic technique of referencing and citation
The essay should be clearly written and presented, and follow the Chicago (either A or B) referencing style. Referencing and citations are not included in the word count. The assignment must be submitted as a PDF.
Using artificial intelligence software such as ChatGPT or QuillBot to generate material for this assessment that is presented as your own idea, research and/or analysis, is NOT submitting your own work. Knowingly having a third party, including artificial intelligence technologies, write or produce any work (paid or unpaid) that is submitted as your own work for assessment is deliberate cheating and is academic misconduct.
If you use AI-generated material in the preparation of your assessment submission, this must be appropriately acknowledged and cited in accordance with the Assessment and Results Policy (MPF1326).
Submission is due by 11:59 pm Monday, November 3, 2025. The submission link will be available on the LMS.
