ENGM030: Digital Twinning for Power System Plant

Assessment: Condition monitoring and asset management

Date Set: 23/03/2023

Submission Date: 06/04/2023 (Thursday) 12:00 noon

Outcome: A narrated presentation (duration of the presentation must be 10 minutes ±2 minutes)

Method of submission: eBART

Prepared by: Dr Shanika Matharage

This coursework comprises 20% of the overall module assessment.

This is an individual exercise, and your attention is drawn to the guidelines on collaboration and

plagiarism in the College guidelines.

for further detail)

Assessment Brief

You have been given an artificial dataset consisting of condition-monitoring data from 300 power

transformers. The dataset named ‘oil_test_dataset.csv’ can be downloaded through ELE. The dataset

contains details of the transformers and their condition monitoring data. These measurements from oil

samples include moisture content, acidity, 2-furfural, dielectric dissipation factor, resistivity,

interfacial tension and breakdown voltage. In addition, the dataset contains static data on the

transformers including their unique ID, voltage level, power, age, and manufacturer code. Analyse

these data using R-studio, Excel or any other suitable software and develop a 10-minute narrated

presentation discussing the condition of the transformers of this utility through your health index

criteria.

Your presentation must include the below content.

1. Introduction to the transformer fleet using information such as the distribution of voltage,

power, manufacturers, age, etc. [10 marks]

2. Details on how the condition monitoring parameters can reflect the condition of the

insulation. [15 marks]

3. Distribution of condition monitoring data and comparison with the operation limits provided

in standards or other relevant literature. [25 marks]

4. Development of a health index to combine all the condition monitoring data to calculate a

single health index for each transformer. You must justify the rationale behind the

development of the health index supported by the literature. [30 marks]

5. Transformer ranking based on the health index. You are not required to show all 300

transformers in the presentation. Instead, identify 20 transformers in the worst conditions and

20 in the best conditions. [10 marks]

6. Conclusion including key findings, limitations of the approach, and any challenges faced

during the study. [10 marks]

Literature

You must use the literature available on transformer condition monitoring and asset management to

guide your analysis. Please include any references you use at the end of the presentation.

You have been given two research papers (available on the ELE page) about database analysis and the

development of a health index. You can use them or find additional publications.

In addition, the university also has access to British Standard Library through which you can

download the British Standard on supervision and maintenance guidance for mineral oils in electrical

equipment as below. This is an equivalent standard for IEC 60422 standard. You may also use the

guidance provided in this standard to define oil conditions.

1. Access “British Standards Online” by following the link https://libguides.exeter.ac.uk/bso

2. Download the “BS EN 60422: Mineral insulating oils in electrical equipment. Supervision

and maintenance guidance” standard from BSI stores through the library.

Additional Information

1. Duration of the presentation must not exceed 12 minutes.

2. Only the voice narration is enough.

3. File type for the presentation could be the recorded PowerPoint file (*.ppt, *.pptx,) or you can

export it as a video (*.mp4). Other video file types may need to be uploaded as a *.zip file.
