Self-assessment
After the presentations are complete, you will be asked to complete a brief self-assessment, reflecting on what you did well, what might have gone better, and what you think you learned. Yourself-assessment will not contribute towards the final mark, but will be reviewed and may be referenced in feedback from the module leader.
Educational Aims of the Module
This module introduces students to literary modernism and other literary responses to modernity in the first forty years of the twentieth century. Through close readings of a range of texts, the module aims to help students contextualize modernist writing as an artistic response to a period of unprecedented change, connecting the radical stylistic experimentation that characterizes much of this writing with the historical changes that transformed European society in the early-20th century – from new technologies, wars and pandemics, to the advent of mass democracy and women’s liberation.
Assessment criteria
Module learning outcomes (see below) and the standard XJTLU marking criteria. Presentations are assessed on: adherence to the time limit; the coherence and cohesion of the content, including any visual aids; the understanding and critical application of relevant concepts; and the overall clarity and communicative efficacy of verbal and nonverbal communication, with particular reference to the presentation and interpretation of primary and critical sources.
Learning Outcomes assessed
Students completing the module successfully should be able to:
A. read and work critically with literary texts in English and in translation, reflecting the diversity of ‘modernist’ literature produced between 1900 and 1940
B. relate the effects of the texts on the reader to the techniques used by the author, and in reference to the seismic social changes of the early-twentieth century
C. reflect critically upon the methodologies and terminology used in appraising these texts
D. structure a coherent, critically informed, and theoretically reflective analysis of selected texts and specific passages
