Format

1. Essay: Your critique is expected to be around 1200 words, but must not exceed 1500 words (excluding Title Page, Table of Contents, Abstract, and Reference List).

2. Practical Application: This is a required appendix and must not exceed 800-100 words.

The Title Page, Reference List, and Attachments are not part of the page count.

1. Essay Instructions

Read Steven Kerr’s management classic “On the folly of hoping for A when rewarding B” (find it on Stream).

Write a 1200 word critique of this article.

n Begin by very briefly summarising  Kerr’s paper on organisational incentive systems.

n Outline an example other than one of those outlined by Kerr.

n Why do you think the problems identified by Kerr happen?

n Finally is the concept of “unintended negative consequences” still applicable 30 years on from the publishing of the original paper?

Please note: All of your ideas must be derived from the scholarly literature.

Suggested Approach

Read the article several times.

1. What is the problem being addressed? Some questions you could ask yourself to locate the core problem are: What has prompted the author to write the paper?

2. How has the problem been examined? This question asks you to explore the method used to examine the problem.

3. What remains unaddressed in the problem explorations? No research paper is fully complete and there are always elements that are missing or that remain silent. What are the questions that still concern you about the paper?

To write your critique, begin first with a short introduction (suggest one paragraph), then a brief summary of the article. Make certain your introductory paragraph states the name of the article you are writing about. Cite this article and reference it in your reference list.

To complete this essay to a high standard you are expected to draw from academic and high quality scholarship in developing your critique.  This scholarship will be properly referenced in you essay and the full citation for each will be provided in a list of references on the page after the summary.

Being able to use the Massey Library online databases is a key skill.  I recommend you familiarise yourself with Business Source Complete and learn how to conduct relevant searches on it to find relevant scholarly papers.

Please also note that general sources from the internet, magazines, newspapers, and so forth are not to be used in this assignment.

2. Application Appendix Instructions

This is a required appendix to your essay and will appear after the references section for your essay.  Having completed your critique you must now turn your attention to professional practice and application.  You will address four areas.  You can present this in a question and answer format or use four appropriate headings reflecting the questions below.

1. What is the most important implication for management practice?  Explain what your analysis means for managers and what they do.

2. How would you reframe. or express this from a practitioner’s perspective?  Simplify the key idea, or focus on the core issue and explain it to managers in easy-to-understand language

3. Why should practicing managers care?  Is this important for managers to know?  Explain why or why not.

4. Give an example of application based on the implication (from point 1).  This example can be well-known and reported, or one from your own experience.

The application appendix is expected to have its own reference list comprising sources which are drawn in the main from professional and non-academic sources that are in print and/or online.
