Aim:

The aim of this assessment is to demonstrate understanding of the value of reflective practice in nursing. This written assignment is scheduled early in the Bachelor of Nursing program so students can build on strengths and address any identified  deficits.  The  formative  assessment  process  supports  commencing  students’  engagement  and learning.

This assessment item will assess the first Learning Outcome of the course:

Learning Outcome 1: Describe reflective practice and its importance in nursing.

Instructions:

In module 2, topic 2 of your course, you have explored:

1.      The importance and benefits of reflection in nursing the  What

2.      The link between self-awarenessand professional self-monitoring’ – the  Why

3.      Strategies for developing reflective practice skills the How

It is important that you complete Module 2, Topic 2 before attempting this assignment.

For this assessment, you will write an 850-word (requirement not a suggestion) essay in which you:

1.   Provide an introduction that clearly contextualises your essay and identifies the aim (approx. 50 words).

2.   Define and describe reflective practice, then discuss two (2) reasons why reflective practice is

important to the role of the Registered Nurse. Use at least three scholarly literature sources to support your discussion (approx. 200 words).

3.   Identify a reflective practice model (from Module 2.2 content) and briefly describe the steps of the model. Use at least three scholarly sources to write your description (approx. 250 words).

4.   Apply your identified reflective practice model to a learning experience or situation that has occurred in your own life. Consider what you gained from this experience and reflect on not only what you could have done differently but also what you did well (approx. 300 words). You can use the pronoun “I” in this section ie. you can write in the “first person” but only in this section of the essay.

5.   Write a conclusion that summarises the overall essay, without introducing any new information or references (approx. 50 words).

Other elements:

•     Word limit of 850 words needs to be strictly adhered to (this is NOT a suggestion, it is a requirement) . The

word limit for an assessment item includes in text citations, tables and quotations. The word limit DOES NOT include the reference list. Please note the marker will cease marking your submitted work once they have reached the allocated word limit.

•    Always refer to theGriffith Health Writing and Referencing Guide.Ensure your assignment format strictly adheres to these guidelines.

•     Ensure that you use scholarly literature (digitized readings, research articles, relevant Government reports

and textbooks) that has been published within the last ten [10] years. If you use literature older than 10 years, you will need to justify why you are not using recent literature.  Please note it is preferable to locate and use

Australian sources if you are describing the extent or magnitude of the issue.

•     Use theAPA7th referencing style.

•     Write in the third person, other than in the section identified on the previous page.

•     Use academic language throughout.

•     Refer to the marking rubric when writing your assignment. This will assist you in calculating the weightings of the sections for your assignment.

•     This assessment allows for the use of generative artificial intelligence editing tools only for grammar and spelling assistancenot sentence and paragraph construction. You are required to write it yourself correctly paraphrased from scholarly articles and referenced appropriately. The assessment is to be submitted via TII where both generative AI and copy / plagiarism detection tools are used. If detected, you will be subject to a potential Academic Breach and penalties.
