Principal components analysis: Motivation

Principal components analysis (PCA) is a statistical methodology often used for dimension

their linear combinations may prove to be difficult to interpret. That is, the population PCs

The results are generally similar, albeit less clearcut. One issue here is that the asymptotic

approximations may not apply as well to the sample correlation matrix R as they do to the

sample covariance matrix S.

Factor analysis: Modelling the covariance structure

Factor analysis (FA) seeks to explain the high correlations between variables within groups of

variables in terms of a small number of latent (i.e. unobservable) random factors.

Orthogonal factor model with m common factors

Deciding the value m is similar to deciding the number of PCs to be retained in PCA. Two common

approaches are as follows:
