COMPSCI 313 S2
Mini-Project
Introduction |
This project aims to evaluate the performance of different mobile computing systems. Assessing and testing the performance of a computer application is more complex. With the completion of this project, the students can understand the most critical factor for the computing system's performance. Primarily, the students can design a computing system with the most suitable processor based on some particular applications.

Phone model / Processor / Instruction set architecture / Micro-architecture / GPU model / Fabrication technology / Memory / Storage
o Desktop processor comparisons
Processor / Instruction set architecture / Micro-architecture / Fabrication technology / Cache / Memory bandwidth
o GPU comparisons
Processor / Instruction set architecture / Micro-architecture / Fabrication technology / Cache / Memory bandwidth
• Group information
o Name / UPI / ID
Group formation:
• 1 - 4 students
• The group with n students should compare n-1 processors (minimum two processors)
Report format:
• 12 pts, single spacing, single column
• one page at MOST
Group Report Guideline |
Due: 11:59 pm 21st October 2024
Worth: 8% of the final mark
Late Submission: 30% penalty
Content:
• Comparing the performance of processors in modern computing systems
o Compare a few processors based on main producers:
Qualcomm / Samsung / Apple / MediaTek / HiSilicon / Intel / Nvidia / AMD …
Usage of Evaluation Software (example):
Group formation:
• 1 – 4 students
• The group with n students should compare n-1 processors (minimum two processors)
Report format:
• 12 pts, single spacing, single column
• eight pages at MOST
Marking Criteria |
A. Description of the specification of the processors.
The report should clearly describe the specifications of the computing systems/processors you will compare. The technical requirements include a phone model, processor model, instruction set architecture, micro-architecture, GPU model, Fab technology, and storage and memory organisation.
Examples:
• Instruction set architecture
o Any extensions?
• Logic architecture
o What is the pipeline?
• Cache structure
B. Description and explanation of the characteristics and performance of the processors.
The report should clearly describe the characteristics of the processor. Are they designed using Von Neuman architecture? Are they RISC or CISC? Is the pipelined technique applied? Is any parallel execution technology, such as speculative execution, branch prediction, etc.. applied? In addition, the report should briefly identify the significant differences between the processors. Explain the difference based on the knowledge you have learned from the class.
Examples:
• Speed
o Clock rate, execution time, and scores of the evaluation software
• Complexity of design
o Clock rate, price, design cycle
• Power consumption
C. Verify the performance difference with evaluation software.
The report should verify your explanation with the experimental results. You can use a combination of the listed software above. This section should provide evidence to support your statement made in the previous section.
Submission |
Form. your group and register the group at Canvas.
You may electronically submit your report (in PDF format) through Canvas from the first submission date until the final date. You can make more than one submission. However, every submission that you make replaces your previous submission. Only your very latest submission will be marked.
